Summer frolics on the water

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde is home to the Skuldelev Viking ships. The five vessels were retrieved from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord in the 1950s and have been dated to the 11th century. Visitors to the museum can not only view these incredible artifacts, but also visit the adjacent shipyard.

Here, expert craftsmen work throughout the year on building Viking vessels – both larger replicas of the Skuldelev ships, and smaller boats. All of the new vessels are made using authentic Viking Age techniques and materials.

Every summer, the museum also provides people with a chance to take sailing lessons on the fjord, where visitors can learn now to row and sail in smaller boats in scenic surroundings. Now, the museum has put out a call for new instructors.

Sailing expertise required

The recruitment notice states that the museum is looking for experienced sailing instructors for the summer season, with openings for both skippers and crew. The staff will be responsible for leading guest trips in traditional Nordic wooden boats made in the clinker style also employed in the Viking Age.

There are roles available from April 27 to September 30 of this year, with work available from 15 to 30 hours a week. Skippers are required to have formal sailing certificates, experience in first aid and sea safety training. Crew members do not require formal qualifications but should have sailing experience.

The sailing trips are open to anyone, from families to school groups and general visitors. Applications are received online and anyone interested can apply via the website of the Roskilde Ship Museum.
