The 2025 Jorvik Viking Festival in York, England, has celebrated its 40th year with Viking columns, fire displays, beating drums, and a grand battle between two rival armies.
Thought to be one of the largest Viking festivals in the world, the event brought thousands of revelers and history enthusiasts from all around the UK and beyond to the Yorkshire city for an epic celebration of all things Norse.
Four decades of fun
The Jorvik Viking Festival is one of the biggest names on the European reenactment calendar.
The event was initially founded in 1985 as something of a marketing ploy for the Jorvik Viking Center, which presents the Norse history of York through an interactive exhibition and ride.
Today, the festival attracts around 40,000 visitors yearly for a week-long program featuring family-friendly events, guided walks, and battle reenactments.
The celebrations for this year's event marked 40 years of the festival, which aims to bring the stories, everyday activities, and drama of 10th-century York to life.
The 2025 event ran from February 17 to 23, with the organizers reporting notable growth in popularity and a string of sold-out events.

Fierce fighting and mythical shows
The main highlights of the festival came on Saturday, February 22, when a column of 450 Viking warriors marched through the streets of the historic city.
Onlookers could then enjoy a full-scale battle on the Eye of York – a grassy area in the center of the city – between two rival armies, the Wolves and the Boars.
The clash was followed by a single combat event, the Circle of Treachery, where the last warrior standing was awarded a celebratory bottle of mead.
In the evening, approximately 1,000 paying spectators attended the Evening Spectacular.
This year's display featured an epic retelling of the saga of Tyrfing, a cursed sword that guarantees victory for its holder but always at a terrible price.
The sound and light show concluded with a breathtaking pyrotechnic display.

Always on the up
Other notable events of the 2025 festival have included a Berserker Boot Camp, where people could practice Viking combat techniques; the official Jorvik Viking Festival Feast; and a mead-tasting event hosted by the Lancashire Mead Company.
With the weather largely holding up for most of the week – never a guarantee at Jorvik – visitors were also able to enjoy a Viking encampment complete with authentic trade stalls, academic lectures, and a series of family-friendly events and arts and crafts activities.
"Seeing the Vikings once again take over the city has been brilliant, and great weather for much of the week has ensured that the public has turned out in their droves to share in the Norse entertainment," comments event organizer Gareth Henry.
"Most of our events have sold out this year, and we've welcomed record crowds to the Eye of York for our Evening Spectacular. The popularity of the Vikings continues to grow!"
